Available Bone Width (Buccolingual)

Less than 4 mm Very narrow ridge — may require bone augmentation or grafting prior to implant placement Narrow

Less than 8 mm Compromised vertical space — short implants or sinus floor elevation may be indicated ≤ 8 mm

8 – 10 mm Slightly reduced height — accommodates 8 mm length implants with good primary stability 8–10 mm

10 – 13 mm Standard height — ideal range for most implant lengths (10–11.5 mm) 10–13 mm

Greater than 13 mm Excellent height — allows longer implants for superior primary stability and osseointegration surface area > 13 mm

D1 — Very Dense Cortical Bone Homogeneous compact bone throughout — typically anterior mandible D1

D2 — Thick Cortical + Dense Trabecular Thick cortical layer with dense trabecular core — anterior maxilla and mandible D2

D3 — Thin Cortical + Sparse Trabecular Thin cortical shell with less dense trabecular bone — posterior maxilla D3

D4 — Very Sparse Trabecular Minimal cortical bone, soft trabecular core — posterior maxilla, highest challenge D4
